Haunted Halloween

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

For our annual Halloween party I created a black light bar and made drinks that glow in a black light. Tonic water glows well under a black light because of the quinine in it, so I made “Gin & Bubonic” and tonic water ice cubes. I also had “Dr. Rotten’s Ultimate Embalming Fluid” (Tampico blueberry juice and tonic water) and Toxic Waste (Mountain Dew). Our guests loved it…but were scared to walk past the haunt that hovered over the bar (me).

Junkee

Yesterday I stopped by the fun and funky clothing exchange and antique shop, Junkee, on S. Virginia Street. It’s such a great place to shop, it’s very burlesque, full of colorful drapes, tassles, painting and poufy chairs. I really hope that Reno decides to block off this part of Virginia and make it the “funk neighborhood” with all the cool murals, tattoo parlors, artsy shops and restaurants. They could delineate the hood with a recycled bicycle sculpture like I saw at Burning Man 2007.

Tiny Table

The furniture at Target is usually not up to caliber with anything of quality, but this little table (a little rustic Eames inspired) was a nice suprise. It is made in India and actually looks like it is put together very well with hidden hardware and nice lines. It is $80 now, but I may wait for it to go down to the inevitable 40% off before buying it.

Chairs at the Joe

The new Joe at the university has attracted quite a large group of people who sink gratefully into its comfortable chairs and couches. On any given day you will see dozens of lounging students with their laptops, Starbucks cups and iPods. If all university classes could be held in such a sphere, there would be less cutting of classes.
